Joint operation in Doncaster for safer roads We want everyone to return home from their festive celebrations this Christmas and New Year.
Sadly, this year 50 people have lost their lives on the roads of South Yorkshire and as our efforts to create safer roads continue, officers from Doncaster have held a joint operation with partners to highlight the dangers. On Monday, 15th December, officers from Doncaster East Neighbourhood Team alongside the Driver and Vehicle Licencing Agency and Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency held a check site on Thorne Road. A total of 54 vehicles were stopped, and while most drivers expressed support for the operation, several vehicles were identified with serious safety defects, including ineffective braking systems and bald tyres.
The DVLA also deployed a dedicated automatic number plate recognition vehicle which detected 46 vehicles without valid tax. During the day, five drivers were issued traffic offence reports for various offences including using a mobile phone, having bald tyres and having incorrect registration plates. Three vehicles were prohibited from driving, with one HGV found to have ineffective brakes. Breathalyser tests were carried out on 13 drivers and we were pleased all were below the legal limit.
📣 PC Jordan Kassim from the Thorne Response Team, who led the operation, said: “To drive a vehicle is a privilege but also a responsibility, and everyone, every road user has a part to play in reducing the risk of a collision. “As a society we accept that people will die on the roads, but that should not be the case. The majority of collisions can be avoided if drivers took greater responsibility for their actions. “The four contributing factors to fatal collisions involve drink and drug driving, speeding, driving while distracted and failing to wear a seatbelt; every one of these can be avoided.
“This Christmas, do your part, let’s look out for one another.”
